The environmental context of Acidithiobacillus feorroxidans and its potential role as an ecosystem engineer in sulphidic mine waste

The role of Acidithiobacillus feorroxidans in sulfidic mine waste was examined. Special attention was given to the the possibility for the organism to function as an ecosystem engineer, that is forming its own physical environment. The organism was found to be robust in tolerating low temperatures and as has been previously shown as well inhibited by organic carbon. The conclusion is that Acidithiobacillus feorroxidans is an important organism in understanding the microbiology in sulfidic mine waste, but not the only important organism in such a system.
